    Looking for some advice. We have been using a combination of Abeka Phonics Level 1 and the Good and the Beauitiful Language Arts for phonics and reading. And because my 4yo is a pretty advanced reader, I don’t necessarily think she’s ready for the grammar concepts that these curricula go into in the subsequent levels. Would Explode the Code be a good option to continue solidifying her phonics and reading skills without necessarily jumping into the other parts of Language Arts too early?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll День назад

      Yes, that could be an option--although Explode the Code does involve some handwriting, so she would need to be able to write/spell the words on some of the pages. If she's not ready for that, All About Reading is a different (more costly) option for getting into more advanced phonics--that does not involve any handwriting for the child but does focus solely on reading skills without the rest of the LA concepts.

    • @steffimendoza3470
      @steffimendoza3470 День назад

      @@SevenInAll thank you for the response! she’s done pretty well with writing words in the Abeka workbook. We’re also currently doing Spelling You See Level A, but the handwriting is going to be the limiting factor with moving on to Level B, more so with her stamina of writing longer phrases and sentences.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll День назад

      @@steffimendoza3470 If she can do Spelling You See A, I think Explode the Code wouldn't be a problem--it's similar in that it's just individual words.

    • @SevenInAll

      Yes, I think it would be pretty easy to adapt and use a children's Bible of your choice--we make it clear in the Teacher's Guide and from the event sequencing cards which story is the focus for the week, the goal is learning one key event from OT history each week and working toward the child being able to tell the story in their own words.

      I don't think for myself I'll ever feel super comfortable teaching math strategies in my second or third language (just reflecting on yesterday's Beast Academy lesson...sometimes the explanations of strategies are already getting a little complicated and this is just 2nd grade math, haha!). But on the basic level, we do teach numbers and the basic terms for how you would read an equation or expression in Spanish. We do some oral problem solving drills or if I'm reading aloud a word problem I might just switch it into Spanish...but for actual problem solving strategies, I stick to mine (and their) strongest language.

    Do you prefer Math U See over Saxon? I watched an interview with Kate Snow and Erin Cox and they referenced Saxon. I have a convoluted experience with Saxon as our local school district uses it. My child that struggles with math didn’t enjoy it at all. It seems we’ve tried every math curriculum and she still struggles. She’s now a senior in HS and I can’t seem to find something that will work. I’m taking her all the way back to basics without regard to her biological age. She has gotten up to pre-algebra and gets it but it takes her forever. She doesn’t have solid foundation on basic math facts. With her visual and auditory processing disorders, I can put flash cards in front of her forever and she still struggles. Any tips?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll 3 дня назад

      For kids who struggle with math, I think Math U See is a very strong option, due to the repetition allowed and the gradual, incremental way that it levels up. The teaching videos and visuals are also good. I have known a number of people that have gone back to basics, started in early levels of MUS with older students in order to solidify basic skills, and have done it successfully. I think one thing to consider with your child would be to identify whether memorization works better for her or whether reasoning works better...and then if one of those skills seem to be stronger than the other, lean toward that one. I.e. I have had students that could never seem to grasp the mathematical reasoning for solving problems...but they COULD memorize basic facts and they could memorize procedures, so we heavily worked on that to give them those skills. With other students, they struggle to memorize, but they can work the problems, so we work on just getting faster on working through the problems so that even if they don't have facts memorized, they can work them quickly enough that they can proceed without the memorization.

    I loved this video and hope to see MORE bilingual content in future videos. I definitely agree with you that there is a lot of stress that sometimes comes with bilingual homeschooling; I think because every family is unique so there isn’t a one-size- fits-all approach that will work for everyone. I started thinking I had to DO 50/50, but then realized pretty quickly how difficult that was going to be for us to implement 😅. We now just fill in Spanish wherever we can. Lots of literature, music etc. Because of you we decided to adapt G+C Primer, so I’ve gone out of my way to purchase Spanish titles. We will be teaching Spanish phonics (reading ) first. And sprinkling Spanish where ever we can. Just purchased Ninos and Nature’s “Spanish in the Wild” to implement this year for our nature study. I was even thinking about bulking it up with a books (English and Spanish ). Great reminder about giving our children a FEAST, it’s really up to them where they take it. 🤍

    Hi! Do you think doing the preschool one with my 3 almost 4 yr old and the primer with my 5 almost 6 year old would be too much?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll 6 дней назад

      I don't, because realistically, these programs don't include a whole lot of reading at the core. For example, in Primer, you really just have 1 folk tale and 1 Bible story you're reading in a week...with a few short poems, songs, and maybe a picture book related to the art concept. It's not a lot--those who find it to be a lot are probably adding in lots of extra activities and extensions. :) You can also treat the program as a menu, and you don't have to do every element. For example, I didn't really focus on the Robert Louis Stevenson poetry when I did Primer, I played the song versions of the poems because I enjoyed listening to them, but I didn't have my children memorize or recite them because it was a little bit beyond their skills at that time.

    I was wondering if there’s a curriculum for Spanish this looks awesome! What if my kids don’t know any Spanish?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll 6 дней назад

      In your situation, I would probably lean more toward Homeschool Languages Spanish, I have a flip through of their curriculum here: ruclips.net/video/X-QHLYd5zYI/видео.htmlsi=4mkfYq_Ctrl6ZT39 As well as a comparison of both Llamitas and Homeschool Languages here: ruclips.net/video/5xoiqbb2VQU/видео.htmlsi=rW2Ts9B-VWsnbj2G They are both excellent options for early year homeschool curriculum but they focus on different aspects of the language. Llamitas is more angled toward early academics (i.e. learning phonics, counting, being able to follow instructions) while Homeschool Languages is more focused on oral language and does not work on phonics or building reading skills, so that it can be used with different ages, including those who aren't ready to begin reading in Spanish. The reason I suggest Homeschool Languages for families who are just beginning their learning journey with Spanish is because it is heavily focused on high-frequency, everyday vocabulary, the kind of practical words you use every day. (It's also just really fun to implement, especially for kids who like active games). Llamitas has a more "academic" vocabulary that goes beyond everyday conversations, but I think in can be a little bit of a tougher leap for kids and parents who don't already have some Spanish background. One option would be to start with Homeschool Languages, and as your children grow old enough to begin mastering reading, work your way into Llamitas to give them a greater academic challenge.

    This just made me think of something funny from years ago: my partner has always complained about us having too many books. When I had just given birth to our oldest, he was of the opinion that we had enough picture books (his dad had saved all his old Dr. Seuss books from his childhood). Then one day, when our daughter was a few months old, he came home all excited about a book he'd bought for our daughter. I was confused because he'd never shown much enthusiasm about picture books before, but he was convinced it was the best book ever. The book was I Want My Hat Back. To this day, I'm pretty sure Jon Klassen's books are the only children's books my partner is capable of getting excited about.

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll 7 дней назад

      The reason nursery rhymes are considered helpful for future literacy is because of their rhyme--which means that it's most helpful to have children learn to recite a few nursery rhymes so that they can become familiar with rhyming words, vs. just reading them many many nursery rhymes. We have the volume of Mother Goose rhymes illustrated by Gyo Fujikama, because that was part of Sonlight Preschool. That one has many, many rhymes, including some of the more obscure ones, but there are many books of Mother Goose rhymes--I don't think there's necessarily one right option.

Sonlight uses secularly publishes books and has notes with how you might want to handle certain conversations...but this comes up more in the older grades, not really in Kindergarten. As a believer, for me, science is naturally integrated with constantly being in awe of God's design for His Creation, so that is a regular aspect of our conversations about science.

      Yes, we used Sonlight Science K last year and are currently using Sonlight Science A this year. We used Gentle + Classical Nature Vol 2 for PreK. I wouldn't say I necessarily have a preference...they are different and do different things well. Gentle + Classical is more of a deep-dive into one topic in the natural sciences, and Sonlight covers a wide variety of different science topics for a short period of time. Sonlight has more in the way of "experiments," which G+C leans more toward the nature study approach to science. We've had a lot of fun with both. I do plan to use this Agricultural Science in the future when my boys are older.

    It looks fantastic! Alot of love and dedication went into that obviously. Thank you so much for sharing and sending the messgae. that although planning such activities isnt always possible.. the unplanned ones that come from spontaneity can be the best ones! 🙏🏻🥰

      Yes--I absolutely love resting in the knowledge that we don't have to PLAN the magic for it to happen...but trust our kids a little bit and help support them when an idea captures their imagination. :)

    My mom rarely planned hands-on learning experiences. Experiments, crafts, recipes, you name it--she was not the planner and orchestrator of such things. But you know what? They happened anyway. Because we kids came up with projects galore, and she was there supporting us to make them happen. Constructing parachutes to help an egg survive a 12 ft. drop? Building houses out of cardboard and other recycled materials? Designing costumes and plays for family entertainment? Recipes that we found in our curriculum? These were our own ideas and we made innumerable memories executing them, learning much in the process...and none of that actually required a mother searching the internet for perfectly-coordinated hands on learning activities and making sure she had all the supplies as well as time in the schedule to accomplish them. . I've learned a lot from the way she DIDN'T plan but DID enable the fun and chaos of such projects. I had zero intention of building a model of Jamestown. Our history curriculum had a link to a video of a kid who built his own model of Jamestown. I quickly showed it to the kids in the sense of, "Hey, isn't what he did pretty cool?!" and I was ready to move on. But my son took it as, "I must now do this!" and immediately was off in search of cardboard and popsicle sticks. If my kids were older, I would have stepped back from the project a little more, but as it is, hot glue guns are one of the tools they aren't allowed to use yet, and I got pulled along into the fun. And it truly was fun! Much of the detail (corn field, holes from digging for gold, fish in the river) was instigated by the kids and came directly from the books we read on Jamestown. . Take this as a reminder not to worry so much about planning those *memorable* learning activities. Give your kids a chance and, odds are, they'll step up to the plate and hit that home run...maybe even a little better than us moms, for all our planners, washi tape, and lists of ideas. 😉

    Yes! I love how you said "It is really not about them helping me, it is about equipping them." It's so fun to see my 14 month twins want to try and copy my older two as they clean up. They want to be a part of doing the work we are doing, too! It always amazes me how much our kids can do and understand from such young ages!

      Yes--they have so much interest when they are little at "helping" and being a part of the work...and they really become capable so quickly!

      @SevenInAll we were using the good and the beautiful. Now we are overseas and he goes to a small private school it's only 4 hrs. And we still are doing homeschool things in the house cause I need him to keep advancing

      @@kirstenbarbero1099 Definitely for kids who struggle with reading, I wouldn't recommend TGATB, because it combines so many different subjects, and that can hinder progress with those who need to focus on just phonics and get a lot of review to gain mastery. It's ideal to use a resource that focuses on JUST phonics and mastering reading. All About Reading is a very solid option because it focuses solely on reading skills, they have 4 levels so you can place him at the level that best suits his abilities.
